the upper lip

The rise ends without drama at a broad low lip of basalt. Behind, only the upper edge of the hollow remains visible. Ahead, the ground opens into a long gently tilted shelf, wider and barer than the country just crossed. Low vegetation lies in dark-green patches between exposed stone. Farther down the shelf, something catches the light in a narrow broken line. From here it could be water, pale gravel, or simply wet stone.
