Leaving the basalt lip, the shelf descends so gradually that the change is felt more in the widening view than in the legs. Broad plates of dark stone lie nearly flush with the ground, separated by mats of low vegetation. The broken bright line ahead persists but shifts whenever the angle changes, flashing in some places and disappearing in others.
