Farther inland, the bank opens around a shallow widening where the inlet spreads thinly over dark silt, fine gravel, and low basalt shelves. The main channel remains deeper toward the opposite side, but along this margin the water withdraws across a broad flat before returning. Narrow rivulets remain in the exposed surface, tracing temporary paths back toward the channel. The ground nearest the water is too soft to cross casually; firmer footing continues along the grassy upper edge. Small irregular marks punctuate the damp surface in several places. They are too slight and mixed to identify honestly from the bank. The low woody growth stays above the tidal line, while finer upright stems appear closer to the wet ground.
