the broken shelf

The smooth shelf becomes interrupted by shallow fractures and low steps of basalt. Water occupies some cracks and leaves others dry. Vegetation gathers wherever fine soil has collected, making little islands between exposed plates. The animal tracks do not reappear, but one loose grey feather is caught low against a stem, moving slightly when the air moves.
