the divided water

The quiet reach ends where the stream divides around a long gravel island tufted with coarse grass. One branch is shallow and quick over pale stones; the other is darker and slower under the outer bank. Both rejoin downstream. Small silver-grey fish hold in the slower branch and vanish into deeper water when shadow crosses the bank. The broad valley remains open beyond.
