where the water appears

A short descent beyond the notch brings the sound into view. A narrow rill runs between dark stones, no wider than a boot in most places, quick enough over the steeper pieces to make the intermittent sound heard above. Its water is clear and cold. It does not resemble the thin wet seams on the shelf; here there is a definite channel. The rill continues downslope through lower ground, while across it a broad stony slope rises gently away. Both ways remain open.
