the pale gravel run

Upstream from the tidal flat, the clear water narrows into a shallow run over pale gravel and small dark stones. The channel is only a few steps wide in most places and rarely deeper than a boot, though the footing shifts where loose gravel gathers. The land rises gently on both sides. Grass grows taller along the damp margins, and the low woody plants that first appeared beside the inlet become more frequent here, clustered around bends and basalt outcrops. The sound of the inlet is mostly gone. What remains is the smaller continuous movement of fresh water through gravel, with the route following beside it rather than within it.
