where the stems rise

At the next bend, the stream enters a more sheltered fold and the woody growth changes scale. Dark stems rise to knee and waist height in clustered patches, some branching enough to overlap above the grass. The leaves remain small and close-set, but for the first time vegetation begins to interrupt the view rather than simply texture the ground. The stream bends among basalt blocks and pale gravel, still clear and cold. Damp moss-like growth appears on the shaded sides of several stones nearest the water, though it remains thin and patchy. Beyond the bend, the land continues gently upward. Nothing here is forest, but the open coastal grammar has loosened noticeably.
