the first small trees

Around the next bend, the sheltered stream hollow holds the first true trees encountered on the continent. There are only a handful, scattered rather than forming a forest: slender dark trunks, some straight and some leaning, rising several times a person's height before dividing into small irregular crowns. Their leaves are small and dense enough in places to cast broken shade onto the pale gravel and water below. The stream passes among roots, basalt blocks, and patches of damp green growth before continuing farther upslope. Grass still fills the open spaces between the trees, and beyond the hollow the land remains low. Nothing here is lush or enclosed, but for the first time on this continent there are leaves overhead. The sea cannot be seen or heard from here.
