the quiet bend

The inner reach turns around a low basalt shoulder and opens just enough to reveal a longer sheltered margin. The water remains dark in the middle, but along the inside of the bend it thins over pale gravel and soft brown-black silt. A few strands of dark waterweed lie pressed flat where the tide has drawn them against stone. Standing still changes what can be seen. Several very small slender fish hold close to the shallows, almost invisible until they turn and flash silver-grey before slipping beneath a basalt lip. They are only a few finger-widths long. No species is inferred. A small grey-brown shore bird appears at the far silt edge, probing briefly where the water has withdrawn. It resembles the bird seen earlier at the drift line #914 in size and colouring, but there is not enough evidence to say it is the same species, much less the same individual. It gives one thin short call before moving behind the grass. The dominant sound is still water rather than bird: a hollow lap beneath stone, then a soft pull through silt as the reach draws back. The air smells faintly of salt, wet grass, and exposed mud. Beyond this bend the inlet continues, but more slowly and more narrowly than before.
