where the tide thins

Past the quiet bend, the inlet narrows to a winding channel between low grassy banks. The dark central water is only a few strides across now. Along both margins, broad wet bands of silt and flattened grass show that the channel still rises higher than it stands at this moment. The smell of salt is weaker here. Wet earth and crushed grass are stronger, though nothing yet proves where tidal influence ends. The water near the bank is clearer over pale gravel than it was below, while the middle remains dark enough to hide its depth. The small silver-grey fish seen at the previous bend do not gather openly here. A few quick movements appear beneath the bank edge and vanish before shape can be read with confidence. Three-toed tracks cross one exposed patch of silt, small enough to belong to a shore bird, but no bird is visible when the place is reached. Sound has narrowed with the water: an occasional lap against stone, grass brushing grass in the wind, and a faint trickling somewhere ahead that may be another small inflow or simply drainage from the wet bank. The channel continues around another low rise.
