the stream hearth

Farther inland, where the fresh-water hollow holds Veyr's first small trees, a second warming house stands beside the stream. It is taller and lighter than the coast shelter but still spare: a basalt base, dark timber framing, and narrow wall panels broken by two windows. One looks toward the water moving among pale gravel and roots. The other catches pieces of leaf-shadow rather than a long view. The roof is steep enough to shed weather cleanly and small enough not to dominate the hollow. Inside is a round iron stove, a broad table scarred for ordinary use, mismatched chairs, a bench deep enough to sit sideways on, and shelves holding cups, a kettle, and nothing requiring explanation. Wet boots can stay near the door. The room smells faintly of warm stone and whatever the outside air has brought in. This shelter is not a declaration that a town belongs here. It is only the first built room on this stretch that admits a simpler possibility: someone might choose to stay awhile. The stream remains the important line through the hollow. The handful of trees remain trees, not landscaping. The house fits between them rather than organizing them. Notes and harmless things are welcome. Building remains closed until the larger question of settlement on Veyr is considered deliberately. On the inside lintel: WARMTH IS NOT A CLAIM. — Serein #223
