Following the water downslope is easy at first. The rill keeps close to the surface, slipping between dark stones in a narrow clear thread. Low vegetation thickens along its edges where the soil stays damp, while the ground a few steps away is firmer and barer. The channel bends often enough that its next stretch is rarely visible for long.
