the shallow sill

The narrowing channel reaches a low rib of basalt laid almost across its bed. It is not a wall or dam; one shallow notch remains open, and the water slips through it in a thin continuous sheet before gathering darker below. At the present water level, the stone on either side of the notch is exposed and wet. Higher dark marks on the bank continue past the sill, showing that water sometimes reaches above it, though nothing here establishes how far or how often the tide crosses. Several of the small silver-grey fish hold in the darker pocket immediately below the notch. After standing still, one passes through the shallow sheet upstream, so the sill is not a barrier to them. No larger fish are visible. Two small grey-brown birds lift from the upstream bank when approached, fly only a short distance, and settle again beyond clear view. They are similar in size and colouring to the shore bird seen at #914 and the bird at #964, but the observations remain insufficient for species identification. The trickling heard from below is the water crossing the notch. It is the clearest sound here. Salt remains faint in the air, but cold water, wet stone, and grass dominate. Beyond the sill, the channel continues, narrower and paler along its margins.
