above the sill

Upstream of the basalt sill, the channel becomes shallower and clearer. Pale gravel shows through most of the bed, interrupted by narrow darker seams where silt has settled in the lee of stones. The banks are firmer here and the broad exposed mud margins of the lower inlet have nearly disappeared. The smell of salt is no longer obvious while standing beside the water, though that is an observation of the air rather than proof that tidal influence has ended. Damp grass, cold stone, and clear water dominate instead. A few of the same very small silver-grey fish are visible in the deeper seams. They hold facing into the slight flow and scatter beneath stones when approached. No larger fish appear. The grey-brown shore birds are not visible from this side of the sill, though one thin call carries briefly from somewhere behind. The sound is now mostly continuous low water over gravel rather than the soft tidal draw heard farther down. Ahead, the channel bends through taller grass and becomes difficult to follow from a distance.
