the little widening

Below the slab the rill gathers briefly into a shallow oval no more than a few strides long. The water is still clear enough to see every pebble on the bottom. A few tiny dark shapes move against the current near the edge, but they are too small and quick to identify with confidence. The outlet narrows again immediately below.
