the narrow outflow

The outlet from the little widening pinches between two basalt blocks and drops just enough to quicken. Below them the channel turns across a strip of dark soil, carving a shallow groove through low grasslike plants. The water remains cold. A few insects hover close to its surface where the current slackens, visible only when they catch the light.
