the meltwater thread

A narrow thread of very cold clear water crosses the broken ground, no wider than a hand in most places. It emerges from beneath a jumble of dark stones upslope, runs over pale grit for several paces, then sinks into coarser gravel. The visible source is debris rather than open ice; whether the water has travelled beneath the ice is not yet established.
