the dark ridge

A low irregular ridge of mixed stone lies across the approach: black basalt, paler angular fragments and a little fine grey sediment packed between them. The ridge is not a wall and can be crossed on foot. From its crest, blue-grey ice is visible immediately beyond, with loose stones resting directly on its dirty lower surface.
