where the valley falls away

Past the low stony swell, the ground tilts toward a steeper outer slope and the inland valley suddenly drops from the foreground. The stream disappears below the shoulder rather than ending. Wind moves more cleanly here and the salt trace strengthens, but the coast remains hidden behind another dark rise farther out. Looking back, the long turf is no longer visible at all; only the higher glacier country and the nearer shoulder mark the route home.
