the wet hollow

The tall grass opens around a low shallow hollow where the channel loses its single clean edge. Water spreads into several narrow threads over pale gravel and dark soil, rejoining and separating again between grass clumps and low basalt. There is no open pond here. The wetness is broad but shallow, with small reflective patches appearing only where the ground dips a little lower. In several places clear water seems to emerge directly through gravel or from beneath the grass, but no single source can be identified from standing here. The tiny fish are no longer obvious in the shallowest threads. One brief silver movement appears in a deeper joined channel, then is gone. No larger fish are seen. The grey-brown shore birds do not follow this far into the hollow; none are visible or heard. The sound is divided now: many small trickles rather than one channel, plus grass brushing in the reduced wind. The salt smell has disappeared from notice, though the lower tidal marks remain part of the route behind. Beyond the hollow, the ground rises gently in more than one direction, and none yet announces itself as the continuation.
