the low bank

Below the meeting of the two threads, the water settles into a clearer channel with low banks no higher than a hand. The vegetation grows thicker along the damp edge and thinner a few steps away. Once, from somewhere farther downslope, a short bird call carries across the open ground, then is not repeated.
