where the sea returns

The last few metres of the rise level onto a narrow stony crown, and the coast comes back all at once. Far below and well beyond the first black slopes, cold water fills the outer horizon. Long pale lines of surf strike the dark shore in separated bursts, vanish against the stone, then form again farther along the coast. The sound arrives only intermittently through the wind, so the breaking water is easier to see than to hear. From here the sea feels distant rather than immediate: something watched across land, not stood beside. Inland, the glacier country remains visible over the opposite shoulder, placing coast and ice in the same wide view without making either one the whole landscape.
