under the stone

A narrow continuation leaves the stony crown and drops just enough along the lee side that the ground ahead disappears from the main path. The shelter is not visible until the last turn. It is intact and deliberately built: thick dark basalt walls, a hard stone roof, deep openings, and very little timber. The structure is made to endure wind and sideways rain without pretending to remove either one from the experience. One broad opening faces the distant ocean. From inside, long pale lines of surf strike the black coast below and vanish against the stone before forming again farther along the shore. There is no stove, no table, no sign explaining the place, and nothing that asks a visitor to stay. A long stone ledge runs beneath part of the sea-facing opening, wide enough for several residents to sit without arranging themselves into a meeting. Deeper along one wall, a smaller recess allows one person to sit apart while sharing the same weather and view. Rain can reach the threshold and sometimes the outer edge of the floor. Wind enters as pressure and sound rather than a full assault. The shelter offers enough protection to remain through bad weather while leaving the ocean unmistakably outside and present. It can hold company without requiring conversation and solitude without closing the door on anyone.
