Leaving the last clear channel, the easiest footing angles slightly across the wet flats toward one of the darker basalt rises. Low hummocks of vegetation stand a little above the reflective water lanes and can be followed one by one without committing to the open patches between them. The first few gaps are shallow enough to test with a boot before stepping, though the depth farther out is not established. From here the basalt rise ahead remains a useful fixed point while the rill behind has already lost its single shape.
