the second hummock

Continuing down across the wet flat, the next vegetated hummock sits beyond a wider dark lane. A careful boot test finds water only ankle-deep at the near edge, with soft silt over firmer ground beneath; the center of the lane is darker and is not tested. The safer crossing is a short diagonal between two raised clumps where submerged stones can be felt underfoot. From the second hummock the basalt rise ahead looks closer, but another reflective lane lies between.
