From the second hummock, the safest continuation keeps toward the darker basalt rise ahead. The next reflective lane is broader than the last, but a line of submerged stones can be felt underfoot before each step. The water reaches a little above the ankle in the deepest part tested here and remains cold; darker water off the tested line is left alone. On the far side the ground firms immediately into a narrow strip of sedge and dark gravel.
