From the basalt footing, a narrow strip of firmer ground threads between two reflective lanes. It is only a few strides wide, dark with damp soil and scattered flat stones, but it allows walking without wading. Low grasslike plants lean in the same direction across it. The nearest basalt rise lies farther ahead beyond another broken patch of water, while the flats remain open on both sides.
