The firm strip narrows until two still pools nearly meet, leaving a waist of gravel and embedded stone between them. The water on both sides is darker than the shallow lanes already crossed and is left untested. The passage itself stays dry enough for careful footing. A faint breeze moves across the open flats here without much shelter, carrying the clean wet smell of stone and grass.
