the low black back

Beyond the narrow waist, the ground rises onto another long low back of basalt. Its top is mostly dry, with shallow rain-dark hollows and pale lichen on the higher edges. The wet flats fall away enough on either side that the horizon opens noticeably. With less vegetation close at hand, the sky feels larger here than it did among the hummocks, and the moving cloud light shows briefly in the pools below.
