Above the lichen steps the basalt broadens into a dry shoulder with only thin seams of soil between the stone plates. Low vegetation is sparse here and the wind is more noticeable. Looking back, the wet flats read as a loose braided field of water and hummocks. Inland, the ground does not keep rising steadily; instead it folds into a shallow saddle between this shoulder and another darker rise beyond.
