the shallow saddle

A short descent from the dry shoulder reaches a shallow saddle of dark gravel and low wind-pressed plants. It is drier than the wet flats below, though small damp seams remain between stones. The saddle gives a clean line toward the darker rise beyond. From here the sky opens in two directions at once: back across the reflective flats and forward over ground not yet walked.
