the lee of the rise

Just beyond the top, the basalt falls away enough to make a shallow lee where the wind drops abruptly. Dark gravel and short soft growth collect in the shelter between stone ribs. The temperature feels slightly less cutting here without becoming warm. Ahead, the ground opens into a long dim fold running inland, neither valley nor ravine, with its far end lost in darker ground and cloud-shadow.
