into the dim fold

The fold carries inland between low basalt shoulders, shallow enough that the sky remains broad above it. Underfoot, dark gravel gives way to firmer soil threaded with flat stone. The wind stays muted here. Short vegetation grows more evenly than on the exposed rises, and scattered stems hold small beads of water though no rain is falling now. Farther in, the ground darkens and a faint sound begins to repeat at irregular intervals.
